Oscars Party

Whoa, were last night’s Oscars a doozy or what? I thought they were never going to end! Jeanette and I got together with some of our girlfriends for our annual Oscars watch party around 6:30pm to catch some of the red carpet coverage so by the time Best Picture was announced close to midnight I was exhausted. But let’s talk about some of the highlights! My best dressed include Brie Larson (like everyone else I am loving her this year and she was fabulous in Room), Kevin Hart (am I the only one that was digging the bedazzled suit??), and Tina Fey (who looked banging and was a hilarious presenter) along with Naomi Watts, Chrissy Teigen, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner.

Of course the Oscars aren’t entirely about the clothes…they’re also about the food! We went all out with the potluck this year, if possible even better than the charcuterie platter that made an appearance at the Golden Globes. Dishes ranged from the homemade: buffalo cauliflower bites, green beans with pine nuts, strawberry shortcake trifle and pepperoni asiago cheese pinwheels to carry out: Ledo’s pizza, Momo Korean fried chicken and Cal Tor chips and queso. To say it was a feast is an understatement. I made the pinwheels with that recipe for the first time and they turned out really well!

Academy Awards Oscar Party

We filled out ballots, munched on the above and sipped on some bubbly. Cut to several hours later and we were all cheering for Leo! So happy he finally won! I also enjoyed Chris Rock’s opening, but didn’t love the rest of his shtick throughout – it felt like he was trying too hard to be Ellen with the whole Girl Scout cookies thing.

Before settling in for six hours of television Sunday night,  I had a pretty busy weekend. Friday night date night included a walk to Thai Arroy for dinner followed by a couple episodes of Billy on the Street we had DVRed. Saturday we spent some time in Old Town Alexandria, watched the Terps and had dinner with friends at No Way Jose. Sunday morning was absolutely gorgeous so we took a long walk to Fells Point. It felt like that first glimpse of spring and it was fun to see so many people out and about enjoying the city. We had a delicious lunch at Thames Street Oyster House that seriously it the spot.

Thames Street Oyster House Shrimp Salad Baltimore

I had Shrimp salad sandwich on the most incredible roll with beets and goat cheese on the side.

Thames Street Oyster House Po Boy Baltimore

Adam had an oyster po boy chock full of big fried oysters with beach fries.

After our lunch and walk I had just enough time for a quick afternoon nap and trip to the grocery store before heading to the Oscars party. It was a great weekend!

Did you watch the Oscars? Who was on your best dressed list?

Food Pics for Days

Since today is WIAW – it seems like a great time to photo dump all the amazing things I’ve been eating lately. (Today is also the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, a day of atonement and fasting which also makes this pre-written post particularly ironic). It’s is also a good reminder that I’ve been eating out WAYYY too much lately and need to rein that back in over the next few weeks. It looks like I eat a lot of seafood. Which I do – especially in the summer. I definitely like to order it when I’m out since I rarely cook it at home. Without further ado, feel free to drool away over these tasty dishes…

Friday Five (Bethany Beach)

This crazy busy week flew by and I haven’t yet had a chance to recap my recent vacation to Bethany Beach. The weather was mediocre, but the company was fabulous and we had a great time doing your typical beachy activities. Below are my five favorites:

Bethany Beach

  1. Beach time – playing paddle ball, building sand castles, venturing into the waves, playing with baby nephew. Whenever the sun was shining, we were posted up in the sand outside our condo.
  2. Ice Cream – my first trip to Dumser’s which is apparently an Ocean City institution. I had banana ice cream topped with peanut butter and was pretty much in heaven.
  3. Coffee – morning walks for coffee were necessary. Walked to Dunkin’ twice for my fave iced coffee and one morning walked into town and went to the Artful Bean where I got a delicious iced caramel machiato and a breakfast sammy with egg, provolone, zucchini, onion, red peppers and spinach on seven grain bread.
  4. Mini Golf – in my husband’s family a trip to the beach is not complete without some Old Pro miniature golf. We checked out the dinosaur course and placed some wagers (losers buy winners ice cream at the aforementioned Dumser’s). Two hole in ones led me to victory.
  5. Good food – our beach routine involved making sandwiches in the condo for lunch and post-beach wine and snacks cocktail hour before heading out to a nice dinner. We went to three great restaurants: Off the Hook, Nantucket and Blue Coast. I think Blue Coast was the clear winner of the three, but there was some debate. Stand out dishes: Scallops with cheesy grits and corn at OTH, quahog clam chowdah at Nantucket and cod with lobster creamed corn at Blue Coast (and the lobster mac and cheese and the tuna sashimi appetizer and the calamari and yes it was all good).

And with that trip, my summer officially comes to a close. What are your favorite beach activities?

Linking up with Heather for Friday Faves.
